For many people, the idea of longevity revolves around nutrition, sleep, supplements or cardiovascular exercise. While all of these matter, an often-overlooked intervention may be one of the most powerful tools we have for healthy ageing, strength training.
A large new study following more than 147,000 adults over three decades has found that people who regularly performed resistance training lived longer than those who did not. Even more encouraging, the greatest benefits were achieved with a relatively modest amount of exercise, around 90 to 120 minutes each week.
Strength isn’t just about muscle
For years, resistance training has been associated with building muscle, improving physique and increasing athletic performance. We now understand that its benefits extend far beyond appearance.
Muscle is increasingly recognised as a vital organ of healthy ageing. It plays an essential role in regulating blood sugar, supporting metabolic health, protecting bone density, maintaining balance and reducing the risk of falls. Strong muscles also make everyday activities, from climbing stairs to carrying shopping, easier throughout life.
As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass and strength, a process known as sarcopenia. Left unchecked, this contributes to frailty, loss of independence and a higher risk of chronic disease. Fortunately, resistance training is one of the most effective ways to slow or even reverse this decline.
What did the study find?
Researchers analysed data from three long-running US health studies, tracking participants for up to 30 years.
Compared with people who did no strength training, those completing approximately 90–120 minutes of resistance exercise each week experienced:
> a 13% lower risk of death from any cause
> a 19% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease
> a 27% lower risk of death from neurological diseases, including dementia-related conditions.
The greatest reductions in mortality risk were observed among people who performed around 90 to 120 minutes of strength training each week. While exercising beyond this amount may offer additional benefits for fitness, strength and body composition, the study did not find evidence of further gains in longevity.
Even better when combined with aerobic exercise
Perhaps the most important finding was that resistance training works best alongside cardiovascular exercise.
People who combined regular strength training with activities such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming experienced the greatest reduction in mortality risk.
Rather than asking whether cardio or weights are “better”, the evidence increasingly suggests that both forms of exercise are complementary. Aerobic exercise supports cardiovascular health, while resistance training preserves the muscle, strength and metabolic resilience that become increasingly important as we age.

Importantly, you do not need to become a bodybuilder to experience these benefits.
Where should you start?
For most healthy adults, current evidence supports aiming for:
> two to three resistance training sessions each week
> approximately 90–120 minutes total per week
> exercises targeting all the major muscle groups
> progressive increases in resistance as strength improves.
Resistance training can include free weights, resistance machines, resistance bands or even bodyweight exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups and step-ups.
If you have osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, arthritis or other medical conditions, it is worth seeking guidance before beginning a new exercise programme.
The bigger picture
Like all observational research, this study demonstrates a strong association rather than proving that strength training directly causes longer life. People who exercise regularly often have other healthy habits that contribute to longevity. However, these findings align with a growing body of evidence showing that maintaining muscle strength is a cornerstone of healthy ageing.
The goal isn’t simply to add years to life.
It’s to ensure those years are stronger, healthier and more independent.
